Health Screening in Mai Khao, Phuket

Plenty of people put off a check-up for years and then find themselves somewhere it takes a morning rather than a season on a waiting list. Health screening in Mai Khao works the same way as everything else here: the sample is taken where you are staying, and afterwards a doctor sits down and tells you what the figures mean.

Three reasons people ask

Long-stay visitors and seasonal residents who would otherwise join a waiting list at home for something they can do in a morning here.

People who need a specific certificate — a visa extension, a work permit, a driving licence, an employer’s form.

And people who have noticed something: tiredness that has not shifted, weight moving without explanation, or a family history that has started to feel relevant. Each leads to a different set of tests.

What a basic screen covers

Full blood count, kidney function, liver function, fasting glucose, a cholesterol panel and a urine test, alongside blood pressure, pulse, height and weight.

That combination picks up most of what is common and silent — diabetes, raised cholesterol, anaemia, kidney and liver problems, and hypertension.

All of it can be done in one visit at your resort, with the sample sent on afterwards — see blood tests.

What can sensibly be added

A thyroid panel is worth adding for anyone whose energy, weight or heart rate has been behaving oddly. If the count comes back showing anaemia, iron studies are the sensible next step rather than a guess at supplements.

Vitamin D, which is low more often than people expect even here — sensibly avoiding the midday sun has that effect.

Sexual health screening, handled as a routine part of a check-up and without commentary — see STI testing.

Certificates and official forms

Visa extensions, work permits and driving licences each want a slightly different form, and a certificate written to the wrong template gets rejected.

Bring the actual document if you have been given one. If you have not, say precisely which office it is going to.

Saying what it is for at the start rather than the end saves doing it twice — see medical certificates.

Preparing properly

Fast eight to twelve hours for cholesterol and glucose, but keep drinking water — dehydration in this climate shifts several results on its own.

Book it first thing. Then the overnight sleep does the fasting for you and you can eat immediately afterwards, instead of sitting hungry until mid-afternoon.

Give the bar a miss the evening before, too. A big night pushes the liver readings and the triglycerides up sharply, and the printout that comes back looks far worse than the person holding it — see hangover treatment.

Being honest about the limits

Be clear about what a panel like this cannot do. It is not a cancer check, it is no substitute for the bowel, breast and cervical programmes you are invited to at home, and plenty of conditions leave no trace in it whatsoever. Clean bloods mean those particular measurements were fine on that particular morning.

There is a second, less obvious cost. Test enough things in enough well people and some results come back mildly abnormal by chance, leading to repeat tests, scans and weeks of worry before everything turns out fine.

So a screen aimed at something specific is worth more than the largest panel available. Anything you have actually noticed — a lump, a changing mole, bleeding — needs examining directly rather than covering with a general panel.

What happens with the results

They are explained in English, with the values that matter separated from the ones that are merely flagged, and you keep the report.

If something genuinely needs following up, you get a plain explanation and a clear recommendation about whether it belongs here or at home.

Often the right answer is at home, with your own records and continuity of care. A doctor who tells you a finding can wait three weeks is usually giving better advice than one booking a scan for tomorrow — see hospital transfer and referral.

Long stays and repeat medication

People here for a season more often need a medication review than a full screen — blood pressure checked, or thyroid and diabetes bloods repeated to justify continuing a prescription.

Bring the current boxes or a photograph of them, plus the name of your regular doctor. Generic names differ between countries and brand names differ far more.

That is quicker and cheaper than a full panel and is usually what somebody actually needs — see prescription refills.

The heat changes your numbers, and your doses

A blood pressure dose that suits somebody through a cold northern winter is often too much for the same person in this climate. You lose fluid all day without noticing, rarely replace as much as you imagine, and the result is a swimming head every time you get out of a chair.

Stopping the tablets is the wrong response. Having the dose looked at properly is the right one, and it is what most people do instead of the quiet self-adjustment that tends to happen otherwise.

It is also one of the commoner explanations for an otherwise unexplained faint on a hot afternoon — see dehydration treatment.

Diuretics deserve a specific mention, because the combination of a water tablet, a long lunch in the sun and a swim is genuinely capable of putting somebody in trouble. So does metformin in anyone whose appetite has collapsed with a stomach upset. Neither is a reason for alarm, and both are reasons to say what you take before somebody hands you a second thing that pushes in the same direction.

Frequently asked questions

Does this happen where I am staying?

Yes — the sample is collected at your accommodation and travels to the laboratory. Somebody goes through the findings with you once they land.

What does the standard panel include?

A count, kidney and liver chemistry, sugar, lipids and a urine dip, plus pressure, pulse and measurements.

Is fasting required?

Overnight, for the lipids and glucose only. Carry on drinking water — going short in this heat distorts other figures.

Does drinking beforehand matter?

Quite a lot. A heavy night lifts the liver readings and triglycerides, and the report comes back looking worse than you are.

Can you sign a visa or work permit medical?

Yes. Hand over the form itself if you were given one, or name the office it goes to — the wrong layout gets refused at the counter.

Is this a cancer check?

No, and it does not stand in for the screening programmes you are called for at home. Anything you have actually noticed should be examined directly.

Is a bigger panel better?

Not usually. Testing more things in a well person produces chance abnormalities, repeat tests and needless worry.

I just need my repeat prescription looked at.

That is a smaller and cheaper appointment. Bring the packets and ask for a review, not the full panel.

Why a visiting doctor suits this stretch of coast

English-speaking doctors, available 24 hours a day. Mai Khao runs for miles along the top of the island — national park on one side, resorts and private villas strung out along the other, and very little in between. It is a wonderful place to stay and an awkward one to be ill in, because the medical care is all somewhere south of you. Sitting in a car for the better part of an hour with a vomiting child, or a burn, or a wound that wants cleaning, helps nobody. Sending the doctor up the road instead solves the same problem without the journey.

Doctor Bangtao Takecare Medical Clinic is one of the Takecare Clinic group‘s clinics, working across Phuket, Krabi and Chon Buri. That matters less for a single visit than for what happens afterwards: if you move on and still need looking at, the clinic you walk into already has the notes, and passing you on is a call between colleagues rather than a folder you are expected to carry through an airport.

How to ask, and what happens next

Someone answers 24 hours, every day on +66 81 718 9080 or WhatsApp. Describe what has happened and you will get a straight answer about whether this needs a doctor now, whether it can safely wait for morning, or whether you should be going somewhere better equipped than a hotel room. Nothing is booked in advance and no hour is a bad one to ask. If a visit is the right answer, reaching an address in Mai Khao usually takes about an hour, depending on the traffic through Thalang and how far up the beach you are. Would rather not make that journey? Ask instead for a doctor hotel visit and the doctor drives up to you.

The clinic itself stands on 152/1 Bandon Road at Cherng Talay, Thalang, about 25 minutes by road south of the Mai Khao hotels and open 24 hours, every day — that is the address to head for when you would rather be examined in person, or when what you need is an x-ray or a procedure room. Should the answer turn out to be a hospital, referral and hospital transfer is handled from the same conversation: you are made stable first, the receiving department is telephoned so they expect you, and the ambulance is booked for you rather than left as your problem.
