Chlamydia and gonorrhoea show up within a week or two. Modern combined HIV tests are dependable at four weeks and settled at six. Syphilis usually declares itself by six weeks; the hepatitis viruses can take up to three months.
So testing seventy-two hours after an encounter tells you almost nothing about HIV, however comforting the negative looks. Give the date of the exposure and you will be told exactly what today’s sample can and cannot exclude.

There is a specific, time-limited treatment worth knowing about. Post-exposure prophylaxis is a course of anti-HIV medication that substantially cuts the chance of infection taking hold.

Symptoms change the plan entirely
Discharge, stinging when passing urine, ulcers or sores, testicular pain, an unexplained rash, or pain low in the pelvis. Any of those means being examined now rather than counting weeks.
Where the picture is clear enough, treatment can begin before results return. Waiting for a laboratory to confirm something already obvious helps nobody.
Untreated, chlamydia and gonorrhoea can do lasting damage to fertility, and both are frequently silent in women — which is the whole argument for testing when nothing feels wrong.
A regional complication worth knowing
Gonorrhoea in this part of the world has grown resistant to several antibiotics that still work elsewhere. That is not scaremongering; it is why treatment follows regional guidance rather than whatever you were once prescribed at home.

If somebody hands you a couple of tablets bought over a pharmacy counter for this, be sceptical. Guessing at the drug is how resistance got here.

Results, and treatment
Reckon on a couple of working days for the bloods. The swab and urine work can run slightly behind that, which is a function of the laboratory’s schedule rather than anything about your sample.
Anything that comes back positive is discussed with you properly, not sent as a bare line on a screen. For the bacterial ones the treatment is generally short — a single dose in some cases, a few days of tablets in others.
