About Doctor Bangtao Takecare Medical Clinic
Doctor Bangtao Takecare Medical Clinic covers the resorts and villas of Mai Khao with
doctor-staffed home visits, 24 hours, every day. English-speaking doctors, available 24 hours a day. Nothing is booked in
advance, no referral is needed and nobody asks whether you live in Thailand. You ring, somebody
drives up, and the price is agreed before a single thing is done.
The geography behind the service
This end of the island is eleven kilometres of beach with national park behind it and hotels
strung out along it, and remarkably little else. It is a wonderful place to spend a fortnight and an
awkward one to fall ill in, because everything medical sits well to the south. The clinic itself
stands on 152/1 Bandon Road at Cherng Talay, Thalang, about 25 minutes by road away.
Which is why this is built around travelling rather than receiving. Loading a vomiting child into
a taxi for the better part of an hour helps nobody, and most of what a holiday produces can be
finished on the spot by somebody carrying the right bag — see
doctor hotel visits.
Open at the hours things go wrong
Outpatient departments run to office hours and pharmacies pull their shutters down. Illness keeps
no such timetable. It arrives after a long dinner, on the morning of a flight, or at four when a
temperature will not come down and nobody in the villa knows whether to worry.
Somebody answers at every hour of every day, public holidays included. Being woken is not an
imposition here, it is the entire job — see doctor on call.
What a typical week produces
Sunshine leads. Guests who landed pale and gave the first afternoon to a sunlounger, then
heat exhaustion from a walk along a beach with no
shade on it anywhere, and burnt skin well past the sore
stage.
Stomachs follow around the third day —
food poisoning and
the travelling kind of diarrhoea together
generate more calls than everything else combined. Temperatures needing
dengue ruled out before anybody sleeps easily. Riders
off rented scooters on the Thalang road, usually
with the burn on the right calf that comes as standard.
And people needing a signed certificate or
documents for a claim rather later than was wise.
Who calls
Families in the large beachfront hotels. Couples in private villas towards Layan and Nai Thon.
People wintering here for months. And a fair number staying near the airport for a single night at
either end of a longer journey.
Almost none arrive with medical records, none speak Thai, and all of them would like to know what
is wrong and roughly what it costs before agreeing to anything. That is the standard case rather than
the awkward one — see English-speaking doctors.
What travels in the bag
- Examination and diagnosis wherever you are staying — hotel and villa visits
- Urgent treatment with oxygen, injectables, adrenaline and monitoring
- Bloods drawn on the spot, dengue and full counts included
- Glue, sutures and dressings, plus the changes afterwards
- Burns, including the ones every scooter eventually inflicts
- Intravenous fluids for stomach bugs, heat and heavy nights
- Children, who account for a large share of the call-outs
- Vaccination and urgent advice after a bite or scratch
- Replacement prescriptions when a bag went astray
- Certificates, flight clearance and insurer paperwork
What a bag cannot contain
Imaging, sterile procedure rooms, and rabies immunoglobulin, which only certain hospitals hold.
Where one of those is what you need, you will be told so straight away and pointed at the right
building instead of being sold a call-out that cannot solve anything.
The nearest place able to examine you in person is at Cherng Talay, Thalang —
see the nearest walk-in clinic — while the specialist
units sit further south in Thalang and central Phuket, reached with a referral and a phone call made
on your behalf — see hospital transfer and referral.
An airport at the end of the road
Phuket International sits at the bottom of this beach, so departures are minutes away rather than
the hour they take from the south of the island. That counts for a great deal if somebody wakes up
ill on the last morning, or steps off a long flight already unwell — see
airport medical assistance and
pre-flight checks.
Money, discussed first
The figure comes before the treatment, call-out included, and nothing gets added afterwards
without a conversation. Settle at the end by card or cash, and leave holding an itemised receipt and
an English report — between them, what nearly every insurer asks to see.
Mention a policy at the beginning rather than the end. It changes what gets written while the
doctor is still in the room, which is far simpler than requesting documents from another continent a
month later.
Part of a wider group
Doctor Bangtao Takecare Medical Clinic belongs to Takecare Clinic group, which runs clinics across Phuket, Krabi and Chon Buri. Treatment
begun here carries on elsewhere without your history being taken from scratch. A branch serving
Mai Khao itself is intended; until it exists, the doctor travels.
When to skip us and call an ambulance
Dial 1669 for chest pain, breathlessness while sitting still, stroke signs, a head
injury followed by vomiting or confusion, bleeding that will not stop, a seizure, a near-drowning, or
anybody who will not wake. Those need an emergency department directly, not somebody driving up the
coast to you — see emergency medical care. Ringing early
costs nothing and changes these outcomes more than anything else does.
