Dog and monkey bites treatment in Mai Khao, Phuket
Dogs on the beach road, cats around the restaurants, monkeys wherever people feed them. Animal bite treatment in Mai Khao has two separate jobs: preventing an ordinary wound infection, which is likely, and preventing rabies, which is rare and always fatal if it is missed.
Fifteen minutes of washing, first
Before the phone, before deciding whether it counts: soap and running water into the wound for a full quarter of an hour.
This is the single most effective intervention available to anybody, and it is done by the person the bite happened to rather than by a doctor an hour later. Prolonged washing physically removes and inactivates virus at the point of entry.
Then iodine or an alcohol-based antiseptic if any is around. Do not close the wound and do not let anybody stitch it — see rabies vaccination.
Why bites infect so readily
An animal’s mouth carries a dense mixed population of bacteria, and a bite injects them deep through a small opening that then closes over the top.
Cat bites are the worst offenders despite looking trivial — needle-fine teeth produce a deep puncture that seals, which is close to ideal for infection.
Hands are the highest-risk site because of how close tendons and joint spaces run to the surface, and a bitten hand needs a lower threshold for treatment than a bitten leg.
The rabies question
Present in Thailand in dogs, cats and monkeys. Effectively always fatal once symptoms appear, entirely preventable if treated in time.
Any breach of the skin counts, including a scratch, because animals lick their claws. So does a lick onto broken skin or onto eyes, nose or mouth.
Treatment after a bite is several vaccine doses across about a month, plus immunoglobulin into the wound for higher-risk cases — which is scarce and held only at certain hospitals, and is why a significant bite means travelling the same day.
Monkeys, specifically
The tourist-specific hazard. They are unafraid, associate people with food, and grab. Most monkey injuries here happen while somebody is defending a bag rather than approaching an animal.
Feeding them is what creates the behaviour, so declining to is a genuine safety measure rather than a rule for the sake of it.
Monkey scratches are frequently dismissed because they look like nothing. They are treated exactly as dog bites are.
What treatment involves
Thorough irrigation, which takes longer than anything else and determines whether the wound infects.
Antibiotics are given for most bites rather than waiting to see, because the infection rate is high enough to justify it — particularly for hands, punctures and cat bites.
Tetanus cover, and a decision about rabies treatment based on the animal, the site and your vaccination history — see travel vaccinations.
Why the wound is usually left open
Closing a bite traps bacteria inside it, which is the opposite of what you want. Most bites are cleaned and left open to drain, then reviewed.
Facial wounds are the exception, where the cosmetic result justifies closure alongside antibiotics, and that is a decision for somebody looking at it.
A bite that has been stitched elsewhere and is becoming more painful after two days needs reassessing rather than more time — see wound care.
Signs it has become infected
Redness spreading beyond the wound, particularly hour by hour. Pain climbing after the second day. Swelling, warmth, discharge or a smell.
A red line tracking towards the body, or fever, means the same day rather than the morning.
For a bitten hand, inability to move a finger fully, or pain on straightening it, suggests infection tracking along a tendon sheath — that is a surgical emergency and not something to sleep on — see emergency medical care.
Children and animals
Children are bitten on the face and hands far more often than adults, because of height and because they approach.
They also under-report. A child who was scratched by a beach dog at four in the afternoon may mention it at bedtime, or not at all.
Ask directly if a child has been near animals and has an unexplained mark. The consequence of a missed rabies exposure is not one worth leaving to a five-year-old’s judgement — see children and family care.
The animal looked healthy
Not something to rely on. Virus is shed for days before an animal appears unwell, and the ten-day observation rule only helps when the animal can be identified and watched.
A street dog that walked away cannot be observed, which is the situation in nearly every case here.
Treatment can be stopped if the animal is later confirmed healthy. Treatment started late cannot be rescued, and that asymmetry is the whole basis of how these are handled.
It is also why nobody will ask you to go back and find the dog. Attempting to identify or capture a street animal after a bite achieves very little clinically and puts somebody at risk of a second one. Photograph it from a distance if it is still there and that is safe, note where it happened, and otherwise let the decision be made on the assumption that the animal cannot be checked — which is how it is made in almost every case anyway.
Frequently asked questions
What do I do in the first minute?
Soap and running water into the wound for fifteen minutes. That is the most effective thing anyone can do, and only you can do it.
Does a scratch count?
Yes. Animals lick their claws, so any breach of the skin is treated as a possible rabies exposure.
Should it be stitched?
Usually not — closing a bite traps bacteria. Faces are the exception, and that is a decision for someone examining it.
Why are cat bites treated so seriously?
Fine teeth make a deep puncture that seals over, which is close to ideal conditions for infection despite looking trivial.
A monkey scratched me grabbing my bag.
Treated exactly as a dog bite. Wash it fifteen minutes and get advice today, however minor it looks.
Will I definitely need antibiotics?
For most bites, yes, rather than waiting to see — especially hands, punctures and cat bites.
My hand was bitten and I cannot straighten my finger.
That suggests infection tracking along a tendon sheath, which is a surgical emergency. Go now.
The dog seemed perfectly well.
Animals shed virus before looking ill, and a dog that wandered off cannot be observed. Treatment can always be stopped later; starting late cannot be fixed.
Why a visiting doctor suits this stretch of coast
English-speaking doctors, available 24 hours a day. Mai Khao runs for miles along the top of the island — national park on one side, resorts and private villas strung out along the other, and very little in between. It is a wonderful place to stay and an awkward one to be ill in, because the medical care is all somewhere south of you. Sitting in a car for the better part of an hour with a vomiting child, or a burn, or a wound that wants cleaning, helps nobody. Sending the doctor up the road instead solves the same problem without the journey.
Doctor Bangtao Takecare Medical Clinic is one of the Takecare Clinic group‘s clinics, working across Phuket, Krabi and Chon Buri. That matters less for a single visit than for what happens afterwards: if you move on and still need looking at, the clinic you walk into already has the notes, and passing you on is a call between colleagues rather than a folder you are expected to carry through an airport.
How to ask, and what happens next
Someone answers 24 hours, every day on +66 81 718 9080 or WhatsApp. Describe what has happened and you will get a straight answer about whether this needs a doctor now, whether it can safely wait for morning, or whether you should be going somewhere better equipped than a hotel room. Nothing is booked in advance and no hour is a bad one to ask. If a visit is the right answer, reaching an address in Mai Khao usually takes about an hour, depending on the traffic through Thalang and how far up the beach you are. Would rather not make that journey? Ask instead for a doctor hotel visit and the doctor drives up to you.
The clinic itself stands on 152/1 Bandon Road at Cherng Talay, Thalang, about 25 minutes by road south of the Mai Khao hotels and open 24 hours, every day — that is the address to head for when you would rather be examined in person, or when what you need is an x-ray or a procedure room. Should the answer turn out to be a hospital, referral and hospital transfer is handled from the same conversation: you are made stable first, the receiving department is telephoned so they expect you, and the ambulance is booked for you rather than left as your problem.
